Conference Theme: Convergence of Qualitative and Quantitative Research Approach

Research involves an explicit and systematic approach to finding solutions to problems, often through a process of testing out assumptions. The approach to research can thus be qualitative or quantitative; using the appropriate method most appropriate to the problem in context.

Quantitative research uses experiment to test an hypothesis. Scientific measurement is crucial to quantitative research and can be classified into four (4), namely: experimental research, survey, correlational research and causal-comparative research. In quantitative research, phenomena are explained by collecting numerical data that are analyzed using mathematically based methods (in particular statistics), and because quantitative data is numeric, the collection and analysis of data from representative samples is more commonly used.

Qualitative research focuses on description and interpretation, and might lead to development of new concepts or theories. Qualitative researchers are interested in understanding the meaning people have constructed, that is, how people make sense of their world and the experiences they have in the world. The methods of data collection in qualitative research are interviews, focus groups, observation, collection of documented material, collection of narrative, and open ended questions in questionnaires. Thus, analysis of data in qualitative research involves summarizing the mass of data collected and presenting the results in a way that communicates the most important features.

The first speaker (Keynote Speaker) will give an overview of the research processes and the importance of selecting appropriate approach relevant to research. Speaker 2 will present quantitative research approach, while, qualitative research approach will be presented by Speaker 3, both Speakers will also discuss the characteristic features of specific methods. Speaker 4 will present qualitative and quantitative research approach – a solution to contemporary problems.

Meanwhile, research findings/results in Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Agriculture and Engineering resulting from the two (qualitative or quantitative) approaches will be presented at oral and poster sessions at the conference.

The theme of this conference is to examine the principles and fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative research methods in diverse field of study, to look at the gaps between qualitative and quantitative research and the ways in which these research approaches could be intertwined to find lasting solutions to contemporary problems.
